An elegant and mineral Corton Grand Cru from Burgundy
The estate
Domaine Bonneau du Martray represents one of the most historically significant producers in Burgundy, with a winemaking heritage dating back over twelve centuries. Located on the Hill of Corton between the communes of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, the estate stands out as the only Burgundian property exclusively dedicated to the production of Grand Cru wines from a single contiguous 11-hectare vineyard site. In January 2017, American businessman Stanley Kroenke acquired a majority stake in the estate, while the Le Bault de la Morinière family retained a share and a strategic presence. The estate obtained Demeter biodynamic certification in 2013, reflecting its commitment to the authentic expression of terroir and sustainable viticulture.
The vineyard
The Corton vineyard is located on the famous Hill of Corton, at an altitude ranging between 280 and 330 meters. The soils are composed of a complex blend of marl, clay and limestone, distributed into three distinct sections. The upper part presents poor white marls, the middle section limestone-loam soils, and the lower part a mineral-rich limestone colluvium. The western exposition, unique for a Côte d'Or Grand Cru, combined with a steep slope of 20 to 23%, ensures optimal drainage and natural ventilation. The estate practices biodynamics with yields voluntarily limited to less than 30 hectoliters per hectare for the Pinot Noir.
The vintage
The 2014 vintage in Burgundy proved particularly favorable for white wines. The climatic conditions allowed for the production of red wines with an affirmed fruity character, with well-present acidity and minerality, reflecting the specificities of this year.
Winemaking and aging
After a light crushing of the berries, the Corton Grand Cru 2014 is vinified with care. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, with 25% new wood. The wine is then aged on fine lees for two winters, with regular stirring to develop complexity and texture. After a second racking, the wine stays in vats for two months for homogenization before being bottled during a waning moon phase, in accordance with biodynamic principles.
