Decanter

Silky, narrowly sculpted and serene, Dom Pérignon 2013 is a less hedonistic release than the 2012 (and less intensely energetic than the 2008), but showcases a beautiful mid-place between tension and expressiveness already. Orange-coloured fruit – apricots, mango and orange – play along with snappy lemon syrup and delicate red fruits, the palate teased into considerable detail and length with some trademark Dom Pérignon smokiness. There is immediate pleasure here, although cellaring will let some of the inner complexity unfurl, revealing this to the among the finest Dom Pérignon releases of recent times. 51% Pinot Noir, 49% Chardonnay.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2013 Dom Pérignon is pretty closed right now. Deep and layered, the 2013 shows quite a bit of density today. It's a typical wine for this vintage, a year marked by a warm summer but a late harvest because the growing season got off to a late start. The 2013 is finally starting to open a bit and show some textural breadth, but it remains on the reticent side.

La RVF

A vintage that reads clearly from the very first aromas without feeling locked down, fitting a fresh profile with orchard fruit, flinty notes and a toasty reduction. A fresh style that has evolved slowly. On the palate, the wine is linear, with restrained mid-palate weight yet no austerity. It will continue to develop slowly on this balance; its fine acidic and mineral backbone gives it excellent length.

Description

An iconic vintage champagne with a silky touch and beautiful complexity

The estate

Dom Perignon champagne owes its name to the famous monk and prosecutor of the Abbaye d’Hautvillers in 1668, Pierre Pérignon, known as Dom Pérignon. According to legend, Pierre Pérignon discovered what is known today as the méthode champenoise. According to the story, he taught this method in 1669 to the Benedictine Thierry Ruinart who then historically made Ruinart the first Champagne house in 1729. Vincent Chaperon took over from Richard Geoffroy on 1 January 2019 to be Head Cellarman of the Dom Pérignon Champagne House.

The wine

In essence, Dom Pérignon exists only as a vintage wine, to bring out the nuances of a single year's harvest. Dom Pérignon Vintage is made from an extremely rigorous selection of the best grapes from illustrious Champagne terroirs. Depending on the quality of the vintage, Dom Pérignon chooses to declare the vintage or not. Dom Pérignon Vintage champagne reveals its full harmony after more than 8 years of ageing in the cellar.

The vintage

A cold and wet winter gave way to a gloomy spring with cool and rainy conditions that delayed the vegetative cycle by about fifteen days. The summer was hot and dry, with the most sunshine in the Champagne region, giving the best conditions for even and gradual grape maturation. The rainy spells recorded at the beginning of September as well as the east wind helped to preserve the health of the vineyard. Harvested from 28 September to 15 October, the grapes from this late vintage revealed a perfect balance between acidity and roundness as well as a beautiful aromatic richness.

Blend

This exceptional champagne is the result of a secret blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Characteristics and tasting tips for Dom Pérignon Vintage 2013

Tasting

Nose
The nose is delicate, enticing with its richness and complexity. Scents of eucalyptus, pint and vetiver combine harmoniously with fruity notes (mirabelle plum, apricot, orange flower), spices (pepper, cardamom, stick of licorice) and also iodine and grilled notes.

Palate
A creamy and airy attack comes before an elegant, precise and silky palate, with a saline and enduring finish.
