Description

The Roundness and Finesse of a Premier Cru from Burgundy

The Estate

Historically established since 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, the Domaine Faiveley is at the helm of one of the most beautiful estates in Burgundy. Since 2005, the seventh generation of the family has ensured the continuity of this Burgundian jewel, embodied by two great enthusiasts: Erwan Faiveley and his sister, Eve Faiveley. With a vineyard of over 120 hectares, the estate is one of the largest in Burgundy but also one of the most prestigious. Leading exceptional parcels of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus, the Faiveley Family benefits from a remarkable wine heritage.

The Vineyard

While the Faiveley estate was historically located in Côtes de Nuits in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the house has gradually expanded its vineyard in Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. Today, Domaine Faiveley owns 12 Grands Crus and 25 Premiers Crus in Burgundy and oversees an exceptional wine heritage.

This Beaune Premier Cru "Clos de l'Ecu" has been a monopoly of the Faiveley family since 2003, originating from a 2.37-hectare south-facing parcel. The "Clos de l'Écu" appellation dates back to the Middle Ages, when it allowed the owners of the time to pay the dues they owed to the Dukes of Burgundy. The vines, planted in 1948, 1980, 1989, and 1994, thrive on gravelly soils.

Vinification and Aging

The hand-harvested grapes undergo a short pre-fermentation maceration before vinification in wooden truncated conical vats. Maceration lasts over 3 weeks, followed by gentle and slow pressing to obtain juices of great purity. The wines are aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (one-third new barrels) in the estate's historic cellars: vaulted cellars dating from the 19th century.
