Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips of Taisho d'Akkeshi
Tasting
Nose
Slightly smoky profile with a peat that has characteristic incense notes. The citrus sweetness reveals aromas of lemon, orange and hassaku citrus.
Palate
The palate delights with its perfect balance between tangy notes and unexpected marine flavors reminiscent of ocean breeze, salty soy sauce, lemongrass and sage. Akkeshi's signature peat brings a smoky sweetness that balances the dryness of the incense from mizunara casks.
A Japanese whisky from Hokkaido with citrus and peaty notes
Akkeshi Distillery: Excellence in Modern Japanese Whisky
Founded in 2016 by Keiichi Toita, president of Kenten Co. Ltd, the Akkeshi distillery, the second built on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, represents the excellence of modern Japanese whisky. Located on the island of Hokkaido in a maritime environment reminiscent of Scotland, Akkeshi combines Scottish traditions with a unique Japanese terroir. Production uses Forsyth stills, locally malted barley, and the pure water of the Homakai River. Maturation in Japanese mizunara oak, bourbon and sherry casks, combined with Hokkaido's coastal climate, gives the whiskies a distinctive marine character and remarkable complexity, placing Akkeshi among the benchmarks of contemporary Japanese whisky.
Taisho: eighth edition of the 24 Solar Terms series
The Taisho represents the eighth edition of Akkeshi's prestigious "24 Solar Terms" series, inspired by the traditional Japanese solar calendar. This Japanese whisky symbolizes the "Great Heat", the period corresponding to late July and early August, the hottest time of the year. The indigo-blue label evokes yukata, the lightweight summer kimonos worn during the warm months.
This blend of peated grains and malts is aged exclusively in Hokkaido mizunara oak casks, giving the whisky its characteristic incense notes. The exceptional water from the Homakai River, which flows through the peat layers of the surrounding wetlands, imparts a unique minerality to this spirit. Bottled at 48% in a 70 cl bottle, the Taisho perfectly embodies Akkeshi's seasonal approach and its respect for Japanese traditions.
