Ichiro's Malt & Grain and the Chichibu Distillery
The Ichiro's Malt & Grain distillery was founded in 2007 by Ichiro Akuto in Chichibu, in Saitama Prefecture. The grandson of the founder of the Hanyu distillery, Ichiro Akuto remains owner and distiller, perpetuating a prestigious family legacy. Certain releases, including the Japanese Blended Whisky 2023, stand out for a 100% Japanese blend incorporating rare whiskies from historic distilleries such as Hanyu and Kawasaki.
Ichiro's Malt & Grain: the excellence of Japanese blending
The 2023 edition of Ichiro's Malt & Grain Japanese Blended Whisky continues the tradition of excellence established by Ichiro Akuto. This blend brings together malts from nine distilleries and grains from two distilleries carefully selected across Japan. At the heart of this composition are rare treasures: an exceptional 36-year-old malt from Hanyu, the historic distillery of Ichiro Akuto’s grandfather, and a rare 40-year-old grain whisky from the now-closed Kawasaki distillery. The core of the blend rests on the renowned malt from Chichibu, a distillery operational since February 2008.
Each whisky composing this blend has been aged for at least 10 years, with some components matured between 20 and 40 years in casks. Non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, this blend preserves the full integrity of its aromatic components. The 2023 edition won the title “World's Best Blended Limited Release” at the World Whiskies Awards 2023, confirming the international recognition of this range, awarded four times over the past six years. Bottled at 48% ABV and presented in a wooden case, this whisky is unpeated and showcases Ichiro Akuto’s unique mastery of the art of blending.
