Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 Domaine du Clos Frantin by Albert Bichot
Tasting
Appearance
This Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 reveals a red robe.
Nose
The nose opens with fresh, generous red berries, which give way, with aeration, to a touch of damp earth evoking the minerality of the Vougeot terroir.
Palate
The palate is silky and lively, animated and medium-bodied. The red fruit, very present on the attack, envelops a fairly robust structure that only truly reveals itself on the finish, which closes on a compact, stony frame.
Food and Wine Pairings
This wine finds a fine echo in mature washed-rind cheeses, such as a well-made Époisses, as well as in creamy, generous cheeses like Brillat-Savarin, whose richness is offset by the freshness and tannic framework of the wine.
Serving and Cellaring
This Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 can already be enjoyed, while reaching its full potential from around 2027.
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine du Clos Frantin, Between Fruit and the Structure of the Vougeot Terroir
The Estate
Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) was built up from the 1960s in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, in Burgundy. It belongs to Maison Albert Bichot, an independent, family-owned négociant house founded in 1831 and now led by Albéric Bichot, the sixth generation of the family. Set in an 18th-century property, the domaine has been farmed organically since 2012 and is the house's main vinification centre for its red grands crus in the Côte de Nuits.
The Vineyard
The domaine's parcels in Clos Vougeot stretch from the bottom to the top of the clos, on limestone soils typical of this Côte de Nuits grand cru. This layout brings together, within a single wine, the fruitiness characteristic of the lower sections and the structure typical of the upper zones of the clos. The vineyard is farmed according to organic principles, with hand harvesting.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes for the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 are harvested by hand, then transported in small crates to preserve their integrity, before being conveyed by gravity to the winery. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts alone, in truncated conical wooden vats. The wine is then aged for 14 to 18 months in oak barrels, 25 to 35% of which are new, sourced from different coopers and toast levels.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir.
