An Italian white wine crafted by a centuries-old winemaking dynasty
The estate
Acquired in 1940 by the Marchesi Antinori family — a winemaking dynasty documented since 1385 — Castello della Sala extends over 600 hectares in Umbria, including 229 hectares of vineyards. Located eighteen kilometers from Orvieto, this historic estate built in 1350 became, under the impetus of Renzo Cotarella who arrived in 1979, an essential reference for Italian white wines. Now led by the three daughters of Piero Antinori — Albiera, Allegra and Alessia — the house embodies the alliance between centuries-old tradition and bold innovation, producing exceptional white wines that have transformed the reputation of winegrowing Umbria.
The vineyard
The vines dedicated to the production of this San Giovanni della Sala are planted on the hillsides of Castello della Sala, at altitudes ranging from 220 to 470 meters. The clay-limestone soils, enriched with fossilized shells and mineral deposits dating from the Pliocene era, give the wine its distinctive minerality and characteristic saline notes. The eastern exposure of the plots allows optimal ripening of the grapes, while the significant temperature variations between day and night encourage the development of beautiful aromatic complexity while preserving natural freshness.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage benefited from favorable climatic conditions, combining balanced rainfall with optimal temperature patterns. These conditions allowed the grapes to ripen progressively, resulting in wines of remarkable freshness with pronounced mineral definition and exceptional aromatic complexity.
Vinification and aging
Vinification takes place in the estate’s modern facilities, designed in 2005 to favor gravity-flow processes that minimize mechanical intervention. Fermentations are conducted under strict temperature control in order to preserve the aromatic integrity and freshness of this wine. Aging on fine lees develops complexity and texture while maintaining the lively character typical of the appellation.
