Decanter

Dark and ripe herbal elements with fragrant floral touches, black chocolate, blackcurrant and liquorice aromas – very clean scents. Supple and juicy, this is a touch compact but with lovely firm tannins and a dark core. You can feel the soft power and muscles but they’re well contained and lifted by the cool freshness with a stony, liquorice and graphite grip. A little more serious than Segla but I like the balance and focus. Lots of minerality. Selection of third and fifth terrace.

With its Merlot dominated blend, the wine pops with its display of cherries, and flowers in the aromatic profile. Medium-bodied, fresh, silky, and already easy to drink, and deliver its supple, cherry, and currant filled finish, so feel free to pop a cork as soon as the wine hits the stores. The wine blends 59% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc. 2028-2040. 91-93 Pts

Takes a breath to fully kick in, then shows ripe autumnal fruit character, with bright rubies and raspberries, liquorice and black chocolate. Higher Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend than usual, overall yield is 32.3hl/ha. 12.10% press wine, 3.62 pH. Harvested basically for the whole of the month from September 2 to 29 for the Carmanère. They are also trying Castets, but just 2nd harvest and neither time has really shown the beauty of the grape.

Inviting notes of black berries and violets, followed by a hint of fresh wood and graphite. Juicy and creamy on the attack, the wine develops along a linear line and can rely on velvety, fine-grained tannins that provide energy and breadth. The acidity has your back, bringing tension and then brightness! It broadens the wine’s momentum, which is wrapped up with a juicy touch.

What a thrill to discover this wine! A magnificent deep, intense dark red color with black highlights. A highly aromatic, refined, fruity and subtle nose, full of black fruit notes. When swirled, it reminds me of Brane Cantenac 2010. Extremely precise on entry, very refined on the palate, with a devilishly bright burst of fruit; the wine melts across the palate, fleshy, deep and distinguished. Incredible! Hats off. Blend: 59% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc. Alcohol: 13.5% - pH: 3.57. 10.40% press wine. Yield: 32.2 hl/ha.

Vinum

Delicate and ripe-fruited, with blackberry, raspberry and violet notes; a taut, light-footed palate, ripe-fruited yet with a cool core, fine tannins and a cherry-driven finish. A seductive second wine that will quickly deliver plenty of drinking pleasure.

Description

The structure and expression of a Margaux second wine

The estate

Château Brane-Cantenac, an emblematic estate of the Margaux appellation, has borne this name since 1833, the year Jacques-Maxime de Brane, nicknamed the "Napoleon of vineyards", became its owner. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, the estate has been in the hands of the Lurton family since Léonce Récapet took over its management in 1925. Currently led by Henri Lurton, this Left Bank vineyard of Bordeaux, replanted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, produces wines of exceptional elegance thanks to its singular gravelly terroir.

The vineyard

The Château Brane-Cantenac vineyard enjoys an exceptional terroir located in the heart of the Margaux appellation. The soils, composed of siliceous and clayey gravels on the Cantenac plateau, provide optimal conditions for the development of Bordeaux grape varieties, giving this second wine the finesse and elegance so typical of the appellation's great growths.

The vintage

2025 began with a winter close to seasonal norms with no frost episodes, followed by a dry and calm spring that limited disease pressure. Summer turned out to be hot and dry, causing early water stress and rapid veraison from mid-July. A few welcome rains in late August and September allowed the vegetative cycle to be completed in a balanced manner. The harvest, among the earliest in the last thirty years, yielded small berries in excellent sanitary condition.

Blend

This blend is composed of 59% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. The final blend includes a proportion of 10.4% press wine. Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.
