The Airy Expression of a Great Malbec from Mendoza by Bodega Catena Zapata
The Estate
Founded in 1902 by Nicola Catena, the Bodega Catena Zapata brand is a true benchmark in Argentina. The estate played a pioneering role in the revival of Malbec and the development of high-altitude viticulture. Today, the family estate is led by its owner Nicolás Catena, supported by Laura Catena as managing director. Combining scientific research with respect for terroir, the house produces exceptional cuvées recognised worldwide.
The Vineyard
This cuvée comes from the River plot, a tiny 2.6-hectare parcel located within the Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary, in the Mendoza region. Rising to 1,366 metres in altitude, this certified organic terroir sits on a former riverbed. The alluvial soils are covered with oval white stones rich in calcium carbonate, ensuring excellent drainage and optimal thermal regulation for the vines.
Winemaking and Ageing
The making of the "Adrianna River" Malbec 2023 begins with a ten-day cold pre-fermentation maceration. The vinification includes a high proportion of whole cluster fermentation, ranging from 60 to 80% whole bunches. The wine is then carefully aged for 21 months in one- and two-year-old French oak barrels, preserving the full purity of the fruit and the identity of the terroir.
Grape Variety
This cuvée is made from 100% Malbec.
