Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

This aromatic red evokes sandalwood, juniper, tomato leaf, incense, and ripe cherry and currant flavors. Lithe and linear, with a firm line of acidity and tannins driving the persistent finish. Shows lovely harmony and a gossamer texture. Drink now through 2040. 160 cases imported.

Decanter

In the words of technical director Fédéric Weber, the 2022 Clos de la Mousse is 'the archetype of Beaune,' with its beautifully expressive mulberry and black cherry fruit and hints of bay leaf, pepper, and smoke. The texture is firmly tannic and structured but not heavy or astringent. There was a single night of cold soak before fermentation, and then the fermentation slowly began, with 40% of the grapes as whole clusters. Extraction was very soft, with almost no punching down. The result is tremendously good, with a lingering finish, notable balance, and impressive depth of flavour.

What a stunning nose of beautifully ripe raspberries and strawberries, underlined by dry forest-floor and hazelnut-dream character. Beautiful balance of velvety tannins with excellent concentration on the generous and polished palate. Very long, silky finish that pulls you back for more of this beauty. From a 3 hectare plot from a terraced site with deep clay. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de La Mousse" Domaine Monopole 2022 Bouchard Père & Fils

Tasting

Colour
Deep, brilliant red in colour, the wine displays a beautiful brilliance in the glass.

Nose
The bouquet opens with a powerful expression of ripe red fruit, evoking wild strawberry and raspberry. It then gains complexity with floral touches of violet and rose petal, underscored by subtle notes of dried herbs, undergrowth, and delicately toasted oak.

Palate
The attack is fleshy and delicate. The palate reveals lovely concentration with an ample texture and remarkably fine tannins. There is a remarkable balance between the generosity of candied fruit and a linear acidic backbone. The finish, of beautiful length, stands out for its thirst-quenching freshness and a saline note characteristic of its terroir.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted poultry, coq au vin, or duck breast with fruit. It will also pair very well with dishes based on wild mushrooms, as well as firm-fleshed fish served with a light sauce.

Service and Storage

For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to serve this Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de La Mousse" Domaine Monopole 2022 at a temperature of between 14 and 16°C. This wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2040.

The Elegance and Complexity of a Premier Cru from Beaune

The Estate

Founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard, the house of Bouchard Père & Fils is a true institution in Burgundy, France. Located in the heart of Beaune, the estate has built up an exceptional heritage of 130 hectares of vines over the centuries, including prestigious Premiers Crus and Grands Crus. Since September 2022, the estate has been under the umbrella of Artémis Domaines, led by the Pinault and Henriot-Larouzière families. Committed to a strong environmental approach, the estate favours precise, sustainable viticulture to reveal the authenticity of each parcel.

The Vineyard

The Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de La Mousse" is a historic monopole of 3.36 hectares, whose final blend of parcels was completed by the family in 1872. Enclosed by walls, this terroir lies on a gentle slope at the foot of the Avaux hillside. Its soils are composed of clay and dense marl resting on a limestone bedrock. This unique geological structure retains moisture while ensuring good drainage, providing the vines with ideal growing conditions, free from water stress.

The Vintage

The year 2022 stood out for its particularly hot and dry weather conditions, reminiscent of more southerly climates. Despite these extreme temperatures, the growing cycle achieved early phenolic ripeness while maintaining a good balance. The harvest, which began at the end of August, took place during the coolest hours of the morning in order to preserve the integrity and freshness of the berries.

Winemaking and Aging

The grapes destined for the Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de La Mousse" Domaine Monopole 2022 are hand-harvested in small crates before undergoing meticulous sorting. The winemaking process incorporates 20 to 30% whole clusters. It begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by a ten- to fifteen-day vatting period with light punching down towards the end of the process. After an extended infusion, the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 30 to 40% of which are new, before manual racking.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir.
