Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Sweet spices and tobacco aromas segue to macerated cherry, licorice, tar and hay flavors in this dense and powerful red, with a strong grip of tannins on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. 183 cases made, 10 cases imported.

James Suckling

Very pretty red for the vintage with ripe berries, orange peel and some white truffle and tar. Full-bodied, but there’s a linear bead of tannin and acidity running through it. Starting to drink already. Drink or hold.

Kerin O’Keefe

Truffle, espresso, hazelnut and blue flower aromas emerge from the glass along with whiffs of toasted oak. On the elegantly structured palate, fine-grained tannins support red cherry, blood orange, star anise and a hint of espresso. Bright acidity keeps it balanced. Drink through 2026.

Description

Tasting Notes and Recommendations for Bruno Rocca's 2014 Barbaresco Currà Riserva

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a deep ruby-red hue highlighted by garnet reflections.

Nose

The nose reveals fine aromatic complexity with floral notes of rose and violet. These are complemented by red-fruit aromas, notably black cherry and sour cherry, alongside spicy nuances of menthol and toasted herbs. Hints of licorice, truffle and tobacco round out this refined bouquet.

Palate

On the palate, the wine charms with silky, delicate tannins that coat the palate with elegance. Red-fruit and cherry flavors intertwine with spicy and herbal notes. A fine mineral freshness structures the whole, while nuances of blue flowers add an extra dimension. The finish lingers with persistence, gradually revealing the tannic framework and spicy notes.

Food and wine pairings

This 2014 Barbaresco Currà Riserva is an ideal match for braised red meats, notably Piedmontese brasato. It also pairs beautifully with game dishes, pasta with rich sauces such as tajarin with meat ragù, as well as aged cheeses like pecorino, fontina or castelmagno.

Serving and cellaring

The 2014 Barbaresco Currà Riserva can be enjoyed now while also offering the potential to cellar for several years. Decanting for one hour allows its aromatic complexity to fully emerge. Ideally serve between 16 and 18°C.

An elegant, refined Barbaresco from the Currà cru in Piedmont

The estate

Founded in 1978 when Bruno Rocca decided to vinify and bottle under his own name, the estate now spans 15 hectares in Piedmont, at the heart of the Barbaresco appellation. The Rocca family has cultivated vines since 1834, but the acquisition of the prestigious Rabajà cru in 1958 by Francesco Rocca marked a strategic turning point. Today, Bruno Rocca runs the estate alongside his children, Francesco and Luisa. The domaine stands out for its certified organic viticulture, fermentations with indigenous yeasts, and aging in old barrels, favoring the expression of terroir and elegance.

The vineyard

The Currà cru covers four hectares in the commune of Neive, within the Barbaresco appellation. The vines benefit from a favorable exposure on the hillsides and grow on limestone and sandy soils rich in marl. This distinctive geological composition encourages balanced ripening of Nebbiolo and gives the wine its hallmark mineral tension as well as great aromatic finesse. The grapes are harvested by hand with rigorous selection directly on the vine, followed by a second sorting in the cellar.

The vintage

The 2014 vintage in Piémont began with early budbreak due to a mild winter, followed by a favorable spring that enabled even flowering. Summer brought significant rainfall in July and August, creating considerable disease pressure that required careful vineyard management. Fortunately, the warm, sunny conditions of September and October made it possible to reach satisfactory phenolic ripeness. Producers with well-drained terroirs were able to craft elegant, balanced wines despite the challenges of the vintage.

Winemaking and aging

The 2014 Barbaresco Currà Riserva is made traditionally with indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine undergoes extended aging of 30 months in old, long-seasoned oak barrels. This maturation in wood helps refine the tannic structure and develop aromatic complexity while preserving the expression of terroir. The wine then rests for a total of six years before release, in keeping with the estate’s Riserva philosophy.
