Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Carruades de Lafite 2006
Tasting
Colour
This red wine reveals a deep garnet hue, with slightly lighter tints at the rim that bear witness to its graceful evolution, while retaining a remarkable brilliance.
Nose
Beautifully complex, the bouquet opens with notes of black fruit such as blackcurrant and sweet cherry, intertwined with touches of cedar and graphite. With aeration, indulgent scents of spice cake and dark chocolate emerge, subtly evolving towards tertiary aromas of undergrowth, fine leather and blond tobacco.
Palate
The palate offers a silky texture supported by a fine yet assertive tannic structure. Medium-bodied, it shows a lovely balance thanks to well-integrated acidity. Flavours of black fruit, cedar and smoky herbs stretch out towards a delicate, clean finish of fine persistence.
Food and Wine Pairings
This fine wine pairs wonderfully with roasted red meats such as a rib of beef or a tournedos. It will also elevate game dishes, such as venison served with a mushroom or truffle sauce, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate this vintage, serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, after a moderate decanting of one to two hours. With serious ageing potential, it can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve gracefully until around 2026.
The Refinement and Expression of a Pauillac Wine
The Estate
Located at the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, Château Lafite-Rothschild is a true icon whose wine estate was established in the late 17th century. Ranked as a Premier Cru in 1855, it has belonged to the Rothschild family since 1868. Today, Saskia de Rothschild heads this prestigious property, which covers some 178 hectares. Renowned worldwide for the elegance and longevity of its wines, the estate also stands out for its strong environmental commitment, embracing agroecological practices and a conversion to organic farming.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come mainly from the Carruades plateau, an exceptional terroir located to the west of the château, within the Pauillac appellation. This sector lies on deep gravel soils over a limestone bedrock, providing optimal drainage. Managed with great rigour, the vineyard benefits from winter cover cropping and biodiversity-friendly practices, encouraging the vines to root deeply and fostering an authentic expression of the terroir.
The Vintage
2006 stands out as a classic vintage in the region. The weather alternated between warm spells and cooler periods. Some rainfall called for constant vigilance against disease in the vineyard, but careful vineyard management made it possible to harvest berries of fine ripeness that retained excellent freshness.
Vinification and Ageing
This wine is crafted with meticulous care. The berries undergo plot-by-plot vinification in wooden and stainless steel vats, allowing the different origins of the grapes to be kept separate. The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels that held the grand vin the previous year, ensuring a subtle integration of the oak.
Grape Varieties
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (48%), Merlot (48%), Cabernet Franc (2.5%) and Petit Verdot (1.5%).
