René Gabriel

Kunz barrel sample 2022: silky, fruity bouquet, strawberries, blueberries, brown chocolate, light tobacco. Medium-bodied, finely creamy palate with sweet fruit, good tannins, fine structure, spicy aromatics, light finish.

Jane Anson

In the René sector of Pomerol, with clay-sandy-gravel soils, this is a light but expressive and supple example of Pomerol, a little soft through the mid-palate but with gentle raspberry and red cherry fruit.

Description

The balance and aromatic framework of a red wine from Pomerol

The estate

Jean Bouldy acquired Château Bellegrave in Pomerol in 1951. Today, Jean-Marie Bouldy represents the third generation of his family at the estate, and runs this beautiful property on the right bank of Bordeaux with his wife and children, Aurélie and Jean-Baptiste.

The vineyard

Château Bellegrave 2021 is a Pomerol wine that stems from an 8.5-hectare vineyard, located in the south-west of the appellation. The vines are 40 years old on average and grow on clay and gravel soils. In 2001, Jean-Marie Bouldy embarked on an informal conversion to organic viticulture. In 2009, the entire vineyard of Château Bellegrave was converted to organic farming with the ECOCERT certification.

Vinification and ageing

Manual harvesting with rigorous sorting. Vinification by plot. The wine is aged in barrels (30% new, 30% first-fill, 15% second-fill) as well as in terracotta and sandstone jars (25%).

The blend

Château Bellegrave 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (75%) and Cabernet Franc (25%).
