A Mercurey 1er Cru Full of Freshness and Finesse
The Estate
Founded in 1932, when Roger de Jouennes received the property as a wedding gift, the wine estate of Château de Chamirey, whose first bottling dates back to 1934, is now run by Amaury and Aurore Devillard, the fifth generation of the family. Located in the heart of Mercurey, in the Côte Chalonnaise, in Burgundy, the estate covers 37 hectares, 15 of which are classified Premier Cru. Its distinctive feature is its ownership of two monopoles, one for red wine and one for white, which illustrate the diversity of the appellation's terroirs.
The Vineyard
Coming from the climat "Clos des Ruelles", a Premier Cru monopole of the Mercurey appellation, this wine is produced from a 2.53-hectare plot entirely enclosed by walls. Facing south/south-east, it sits on clay-limestone soil with a predominance of clay, strongly marked by the presence of iron oxide, which gives it its characteristic brick-red colour. The vines, farmed using a reasoned approach to vineyard treatments and harvested by hand, combine old parcels planted in 1954 with more recent plantings dating from the 1980s.
The Vintage
The year 2024 began with a mild winter, followed by a contrasting spring marked by a few episodes of frost. The growing season then unfolded under stormy conditions, with abundant rainfall and limited sunshine, maintaining high disease pressure in the vineyard. These conditions led to ripeness that was at times uneven but generally well balanced.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Mercurey 1er cru "Clos des Ruelles" Monopole 2024 is crafted according to the estate's philosophy applied to this climat: hand harvesting, rigorous sorting and complete destemming of the grapes, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The juices from the old vines and the younger vines are vinified separately before blending, and the wine is then aged in oak barrels with a measured proportion of new wood.
