A Mercurey 1er Cru Rooted in the Limestone Terroir of Clos l'Évêque, by Château de Chamirey
The Estate
Château de Chamirey is a wine estate in Burgundy, located in the Côte Chalonnaise within the Mercurey appellation. While the château itself dates back to the 18th century, it was in 1934 that the Marquis de Jouennes d'Herville committed the estate to estate bottling, thereby establishing its winemaking identity. Today, Château de Chamirey is run by the Devillard family, with Bertrand supported by his children Amaury and Aurore, at the helm of a 37-hectare vineyard, a large share of which is classified as Premier Cru.
The Vineyard
This Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Évêque comes from a climat located on a plateau with an east/south-east exposure, covering 2.06 hectares. The soils, uniform and light, are made up of chalky limestone scattered with small pebbles, promoting natural drainage conducive to the deep rooting of Pinot Noir. The vines, planted from 1986 onwards, give this Mercurey parcel a balance between controlled vigour and a refined expression of terroir.
The Vintage
The year 2024 began with a mild winter, followed by a contrasting spring that encouraged early budburst, not without a few episodes of frost. Spring and summer were then marked by storms, heavy rain and reduced sunshine, maintaining high disease pressure on the Mercurey vines. These conditions demanded constant vigilance in the vineyard to preserve the quality of the grapes through to the harvest.
Winemaking and Maturation
For the production of this Mercurey 1er Cru "Clos l'Évêque" 2024, the grapes are hand-harvested, sorted and then fully destemmed. A cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes a fermentation carried out with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by punching down whose intensity is adjusted according to the quality of the vintage. Maturation continues in French oak barrels for several months, with a measured proportion of new oak, before a period in tank prior to bottling.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
