Description
A Mercurey 1er Cru crafted from a blend of five climats of the Côte Chalonnaise
The estate
Château de Chamirey is a wine estate in Burgundy, nestled in the village of Mercurey, in the Côte Chalonnaise. While the château itself dates back to the 18th century, the estate's structured winemaking activity began in 1934, when the Marquis de Jouennes decided to vinify and bottle the wines on site. Today, the estate extends over approximately 37 hectares and is run by Amaury and Aurore Devillard, alongside their father Bertrand, the fifth generation of a Burgundian winegrowing family.
The vineyard
This 1er Cru Les Cinq is produced from a blend of the finest parcels from five red Premiers Crus of the Mercurey appellation: Les Ruelles, a monopole of the estate, En Sazenay, Clos du Roi, Clos de l'Évêque and Champs-Martin. These climats, located on the hillsides of the Côte Chalonnaise, benefit from east to south-east exposures and from marl-limestone to clay-limestone soils, which are conducive to the steady ripening of Pinot Noir. The vineyard is managed with a high planting density, in the region of 10,000 vines per hectare, and the grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting on arrival at the winery.
Vinification and ageing
The production of the Mercurey 1er Cru "Les Cinq" 2024 follows the method applied by the estate for this blended cuvée: a cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes an alcoholic fermentation carried out with indigenous yeasts, complemented by regular pigeage, which gently extracts colour and tannins. The free-run wine and the press wine are vinified separately before being blended. Ageing continues in 228-litre Burgundy oak barrels, followed by additional maturation in stainless steel tank before bottling.
Grape variety
This Mercurey 1er Cru Les Cinq from Château de Chamirey is made from 100% Pinot Noir, the king of Burgundy's red grape varieties and the only grape variety permitted for the red Premiers Crus of the Mercurey appellation.
