Château Gruaud Larose 2025
Description
A great Saint-Julien wine combining power and elegance
The estate
Founded in 1725 by Abbot Joseph-Stanislas Gruaud, Château Gruaud Larose is a true icon of Bordeaux. Located in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, this Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855 spans a remarkable single-block vineyard of 82 hectares. Today, the estate is managed by Jean Merlaut, a member of the family that has owned it since 1997. The property stands out for its strong commitment to biodiversity and agroecology. True to its historic motto, this internationally renowned estate continues to produce “The Wine of Kings, the King of Wines,” combining prestige with respect for the terroir.
The vineyard
The vines thrive on an exceptional terroir of Garonne gravels from the Quaternary period, resting on a clay-limestone subsoil. This soil has a higher clay content than the rest of the Saint-Julien appellation. Averaging between 46 and 49 years of age, the vines are planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Fully certified organic and farmed biodynamically, the estate favors natural methods such as plant infusions and preventive practices. Finally, to protect the harvest, an innovative hail cannon operating with shock waves is installed on site.
The wine
2025 marks the estate’s 300th anniversary. For this occasion, the bottles feature a dedicated label.
The vintage
The year 2025 stands out for its remarkable earliness, delivering one of the earliest harvests observed since 1989, with picking beginning in early September. The growing season was notably marked by a heatwave episode in mid-August, causing water stress for the vines. These weather conditions naturally limited yields, which remained below 30 hectoliters per hectare. Despite this moderate volume, this vintage promises exceptional quality, worthy of the region’s finest years.
Grape varieties
The blend of Château Gruaud Larose is dominated by cabernet sauvignon, a grape variety that brings power and structure. It is complemented by merlot for its ripe fruit notes, cabernet franc offering finesse and balance, as well as petit verdot.
