Description
The structure and aromatic richness of a great Bordeaux vintage
The estate
With a vineyard whose land was already recognised in local archives in 1461 for its quality for growing vines, Château Haut-Bailly enjoys a prestigious heritage. Awarded Cru Classé des Graves status in 1953, Château Haut-Bailly began a new chapter in its history following its acquisition by Robert G. Wilmers in 1998. Passionate about Bordeaux and its wines, this great patron and lover of French culture worked alongside his wife to preserve the historic heritage of Château Haut-Bailly while bringing an innovative, modern vision to elevate the estate to the very highest level, until his death in December 2017. As Managing Director of the estate, Véronique Sanders, together with technical director Gabriel Vialard, runs this emblematic Cru Classé in the Pessac-Léognan appellation with talent and passion.
The vineyard
Located at the top of a gravel hillock in the Graves, Château Haut-Bailly tends 30 hectares of vines planted on gravel, clay and sandy soils. The gentle slopes of the hillock provide excellent soil drainage.
The vintage
A dry, cold winter delayed budburst by around a fortnight. While May was marked by temperature swings and alternating hot spells and stormy episodes, the vines ripened evenly from late May onwards, thanks to optimal warm, dry conditions.
Summer conditions were ideal for ripening. High temperatures and generous sunshine combined with cool nights, ensuring a fine concentration of aromas and colour. The berries, harvested at full ripeness, displayed sugar concentration, colour and aromatic richness in the same proportions as those of the very greatest vintages.
Blend
This Château Haut-Bailly 2009 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (37%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).
Tasting
Balanced and beautifully structured, this Château Haut-Bailly 2009 reveals a delectable generosity and a very pure aromatic expression of ripe fruit. Power blends harmoniously with a lovely, silky richness.
