Description

A charming and savoury fine wine from Margaux

The estate
Today owned by Marie-Laure Lurton, Château La Tour de Bessan originates from a 13th century tower. Château La Tour de Bessan is now recognisable thanks to its contemporary building designed by Toulouse architect Vincent Defos du Rau. Through the work of the dynamic Marie-Laure Lurton, the estate has clearly evolved over the past years. The vineyard has undergone restructuring and important viticultural choices have been made. Since the 2003 vintage, the vineyard has held the "terra vitis" certification. Château La Tour de Bessan is also home to state-of-the-art technical installations, which have enabled this beautiful property to stand out as one of the finest references in the Margaux appellation, achieving the title of Crus Bourgeois.

The vineyard
Spread over 3 municipalities of the prestigious Margaux appellation (Soussans, Arsac, Cantenac), the Château La Tour de Bessan vineyard is planted in 35 hectares of Pyrenean gravel. The vines are aged 25 years on average and planted at a density of 6,660 to 7,760 vines per hectare.

The vintage
Singular in more ways than one, the 2019 vintage stood out from the previous two through its significant climatic contrasts and its ability to reveal the identity of both the terroir and the grape varieties. After a mild winter and limited cryptogamic pressure, the summer brought very hot weather. At Château La Tour de Bessan, the harvest began on September 18 and ended on October 10, dividing the vineyard into 24 plots. The harvest was carried out mechanically for 30% of the plots, while the rest were done by hand. Only perfectly ripened grapes were harvested, plot by plot.

The winemaking
Since the 2018 vintage, Château La Tour de Bessan has used new equipment for pour-overs. The R’Pulse system blows air under the marc while the fruit is macerating during the fermentation process. This system results in good ventilation and an easy passage of the must through the marc. The macerations lasted 10 to 25 days. The ageing took place in barrels over a variable period adapted to the identity of the vintage.

The blend

The blends of the Château La Tour de Bessan 2019 were produced by the winemaking and talented taster Éric Boissenot. Product of the Margaux appellation, the Château La Tour de Bessan 2019 is made of a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (57,7%), complemented by Merlot (32,4%), and Petit Verdot (9,9%).

The tasting
Tasted in April 2020, the Château La Tour de Bessan 2019 reveals an expressive bouquet, marked by beautiful notes of ripe fruit, accompanied by toasted notes evoking coffee. On the palate, the wine immediately charms with its ample texture, showing savoury tannins while retaining a great delicacy. A very fine vintage of Château La Tour de Bessan.
