Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Lafite-Rothschild 1969
Tasting
Colour
This red wine reveals an evolved hue, shifting from a softened ruby to garnet and brick-red tints, while retaining a still-vibrant core despite its translucent intensity.
Nose
The nose reveals a highly complex tertiary bouquet. It exudes aromas of undergrowth, dead leaves, blond tobacco and cigar box, harmoniously blended with scents of supple leather, truffle and humus. Subtle, well-integrated notes of cedar and graphite are accompanied by balsamic touches, resin and black tea.
Palate
On the palate, the tannic structure has refined beautifully over time, offering a velvety, delicately powdery texture. Lovely freshness keeps the whole vibrant, leading to a remarkably long finish where persistent tertiary notes unfold.
Food and wine pairings
This great red wine pairs wonderfully with refined, delicate dishes. It will elevate noble meats such as a herb-roasted leg of lamb, beef fillet or tournedos Rossini. It is also a perfect match for fine poultry, such as roast capon or truffled poularde, as well as mushroom-based dishes. At the end of the meal, aged hard cheeses such as a mature Comté or Beaufort will create a lovely harmony.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the 1969 vintage, it is recommended to open the bottle with great care using a two-pronged cork puller. Careful double decanting is advised to separate the natural sediment, with moderate aeration of thirty minutes to one hour. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18°C.
The timeless elegance of a Premier Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac
The estate
Although its winegrowing origins date back to the 13th century, Château Lafite-Rothschild took on its modern stature with its classification in 1855, followed by its acquisition by the Rothschild family in 1868. Located in the prestigious Pauillac appellation, this Premier Grand Cru Classé shines at the heart of the Bordeaux region. Today, it is run by Saskia de Rothschild. The estate stands out for its family continuity and spirit of innovation. B Corp certified and committed to organic viticulture, it combines respect for its historic terroir with agronomic research to craft wines of timeless elegance.
The vineyard
Covering 112 hectares at the heart of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyard lies on an exceptional terroir of fine, deep gravel mixed with wind-blown sands, all resting on Tertiary limestone bedrock. This unique soil provides remarkable water regulation, enabling the vines to withstand climatic extremes. Divided into three distinct zones, including the historic slopes and the Carruades plateau, the terroir is farmed with great care, incorporating winter cover cropping and agroecological practices to preserve biodiversity and soil health.
Vinification and ageing
For this 1969 vintage, cellar practices reflect the classic approach of the era. Winemaking relied on moderate extraction, favouring balance, finesse and ageing potential over showy power, in keeping with the estate's historic stylistic identity.
Grape varieties
This wine is made from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and, in all likelihood, a touch of Cabernet Franc.
