Appearance
This wine reveals a magnificent tawny hue, typical of its evolution, with subtle orange nuances at the rim of the glass.

Nose
Displaying great complexity, the aromatic bouquet opens with tertiary notes of undergrowth, cigar box and cocoa, harmoniously complemented by hints of prune, cedar and leather.

Palate
The attack is extremely elegant, carried by tannins that have become supple, silky and perfectly integrated over time. The balance is superb, sustained by a lovely freshness that extends towards a menthol finish of remarkable length.

Food and wine pairings

To showcase this great mature wine, opt for roasted red meats such as a rack of lamb or a fine ribeye steak. It will also pair beautifully with game birds, dishes enhanced with forest mushrooms or truffles, as well as aged hard cheeses such as a mature Comté.

Serving and cellaring

It is recommended to serve Château Léoville Las Cases 1976 at an ideal temperature between 17 and 18°C. Very light and moderate decanting is advised solely to separate any potential sediment, without risking shocking the wine. As this vintage is in an advanced phase of maturity, it is recommended to enjoy it without waiting indefinitely.

The estate

Officially born in 1840 following the fragmentation of a vast historic estate, Château Léoville Las Cases stands today as a true benchmark of prestige within the Bordeaux vineyard. Led by Jean-Hubert Delon, the current owner from a long family lineage, the estate spans 98 hectares of vines. Often referred to as a "Super Second" or "the First of the Second Growths", this château enjoys worldwide renown thanks to its strong identity, producing wines of remarkable longevity.

The vineyard

Located at the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, the exceptional terroir of the Grand Enclos stretches out facing the Gironde estuary. This proximity to the river generates a protective microclimate against frost and favourable to early ripening of the berries. The vines flourish on a complex mosaic of soils, dominated by Quaternary gravel resting on gravelly-sandy and gravelly-clay subsoils, with a few outcrops of compact clay. This unique geology ensures optimal drainage and ideal water stress.

The vintage

The 1976 year was distinguished by a particularly early growing cycle. The weather was dominated by an intense drought that raged from May through August. Subsequently, September brought welcome rainfall episodes, allowing the berries to swell slightly just before the start of the harvest, which took place from 11 to 27 September.

Winemaking and aging

The elaboration of Château Léoville Las Cases 1976 was the subject of meticulous care in the cellar. Following the winemaking stages, the wine benefited from an extended ageing of 18 months, carried out with a proportion of 50% new barrels in order to delicately structure its tannins and enrich its aromatic palette for cellaring.

Grape varieties

The blend of this wine is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon at 58%, complemented by 23% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.
