Decanter

Fragrant notes on the nose, fresh, fruity and floral. Succulent and supple, fresh acidity hits the palate first, a burst of red fruit—so juicy and alive—before the mineral, salty and liquorice tang takes over, with strict tannins giving the wine tension. Really well made, intense yet detailed and sleek. Lively, I love the burst of fruit with the minerality taking the fore at the end. This will be extremely drinkable.

Black cherries, currants and flowers show in the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, soft, forward, elegant and fruity. This should deliver pleasure with ease on release. Drink from 2025-2030. 89-91 pts.

Ripe cherry aromatics, firm tannins holding everything in place, yet generous enough to get things revved up and keep the focus on the fruit. This is exactly what you look for in a smaller chateaux in a vintage like 2022—easy to drink with plenty of personality. 20% barrels for ageing, the rest in vat. Frost at the beginning of April reduced quantities and meant a slightly greater focus on Merlot this year, but there are still black pepper and spiced violet notes from the old Malbec. Jean-Marc Domme, winemaker since March 2018; Pierre Lurton, owner. A value buy.

Le Figaro Vin

A playful, charming nose with crisp red fruits. On the palate, harmony and precision prevail, carried by perfectly ripe fruit. A touch of graphite lends seriousness to an overall graceful profile.

The bouquet of Marjosse is brimming with fruity notes! They are complemented by aromas of licorice, woody nuances and even a touch of freshness. The juicy, mouthwatering character on the palate only reinforces the bouquet’s inviting qualities. A gourmet, flavorful, mouthwatering wine, ready to be enjoyed while also asserting its ability to age in the cellar. In short, it’s a Bordeaux!

Description

A silky and refreshing Bordeaux red wine

The property

Built in 1782, Château Marjosse is an estate located in the Entre-deux-Mers region, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Initially owned by the wine merchant Bernard Chénier, Château Marjosse was acquired by the Deleuze family, who in 1990 transferred some of the plots to Pierre Lurton for farming. In 1992, Pierre Lurton, who grew up in Château Reynier next door to this magnificent Charter House, moved into a second home at Château Marjosse and over the years bought several pieces of property from the Deleuze family. In 2000, Pierre Lurton built an ultra-modern cellar containing more than 40 cement vats and in 2013 became the owner of the entire vineyard as well as the Charter House.

The vineyard

Château Marjosse Rouge is a Bordeaux wine that stems from a dedicated vineyard of 40 hectares. The vines, aged between 25 and 75 years for the oldest, are located on exceptional clay-limestone soils.

The vintage

2022 was a year marked by a hot and dry summer. The vineyard resisted these extreme conditions thanks to the clay-limestone soils which provided sufficient water reserves. The rainy spells in mid-August as well as the nice temperature variations between hot days and cool nights were restorative for the vineyard, boosting ripeness while preserving freshness and acidity. The harvest was early (8 September for Merlot and 4 October for Cabernet Sauvignon).

Winemaking and ageing

In 2017, Pierre Lurton hired Jean-Marc Domme as technical director. For the first time in the history of the estate, Pierre Lurton initiated separate vinification by plot and the creation of micro-cuvées with limited quantities from the grapes of the most remarkable plots, in order to express the characteristics and the microclimate of each of them. Harvested early in the morning and sorted, the grapes underwent cold pre-fermentation maceration (4 to 5 days). Vinification by plot. After alcoholic fermentation, a selection of the best batches underwent malolactic fermentation in 400-litre barrels (without new wood); the other part was aged on fine lees in temperature-controlled concrete vats.

Blend

Merlot (75%)
Cabernet Franc (10%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (10%)
Malbec (5%).
