Decanter

Medium-deep ruby in the glass. Subdued nose with lactic and yeasty hints over a core of dark fruit. On the palate, it’s fresh and refined, with polished, precise tannins lending a gentle structure. Not highly concentrated, but balanced and elegant, with a clean finish and moderate length.

Gunsmoke depth on the aromatics, cloves and coffee wash, subtle but evident, with gentle white pepper spice and soft cassis and blackberry fruits. Careful construction, just impacted by high acidity on the finish. 40hl/ha yield.

A Grand Cru Classé of Pessac-Léognan

The Estate

Château Olivier, located 11 km from Bordeaux in the appellation Pessac-Léognan, is a historic wine estate dating back to the Middle Ages, with remains from the 11th century. The Metzler de Bethmann family, owners since the 19th century, manages this vineyard distinguished by its unique gravel and marl terroir.

The Vineyard

Located in Léognan, the Château Olivier vineyard spans 60 hectares in the heart of the appellation Pessac-Léognan. Soil diversity is one of the terroir’s assets, with 50% gravel, 35% clay-limestone and 15% sand. This geological mosaic gives the wines their own complexity and identity. The vines, averaging 25 years old, benefit from a preserved environment and sustainable vineyard management.

The Vintage

An exceptionally rainy autumn in 2023 was followed by a mild, moderately humid winter. Bud break began on March 19, but temperatures dropped to zero on April 19 and 24. Flowering started on May 22, followed by a drought period in July and a few heatwave days in August. The return of rains in September helped balance the ripening of the grapes before harvest. 2024 is the estate’s first organic-certified vintage.

Winemaking and Aging

Manual harvest in crates to preserve the integrity of the berries. Parcel-by-parcel vinification followed by 12 months of aging in barrels, 35% of which are new oak.

Blend

49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
