The complexity and elegance of a New Zealand Pinot Noir

The estate

Nestled on the foothills of the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, Clos Henri is a prestigious New Zealand estate managed by a Sancerre icon: the Famille Bourgeois, winegrowers for 10 generations. Eager to showcase the finest Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc terroirs, Rémi and Jean‑Marie Bourgeois set out to explore the world in search of a rare gem. After an extensive quest, the family chose to settle in New Zealand, founding Clos Henri in 2000. Today, the estate encompasses 110 hectares of vines, with 42 hectares certified organic.

The vineyard

Blessed with glacial soils, the estate boasts one of the most diverse terroirs in the Marlborough Valley. Shaped by three distinct geological periods, the soil comprises layers of wind-blown clays and rounded river stones.

The wine

Clos Henri Waimaunga Pinot Noir comes from the “Waimaunga” parcel, distinguished by its remarkable clay terroir.

Winemaking and aging

Following manual harvesting, the berries are carefully sorted and 20% of the crop is vinified with whole clusters. The grapes are then gravity-fed into French oak vats and undergo a week-long cold soak before spontaneous fermentation begins. Finally, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak (20% new).

Grape variety

Pinot Noir.
