Tasting

Nose
Pure and airy, the nose exudes refreshing fragrances of fruit and citrus, rhubarb and dry hay.

This white wine can be cellared until at least 2038.

The estate

A passionate winemaker, Ivan Massonnat took over the Pithon-Paillé estate, founded by Jo Pithon, in 2018. Located in Anjou, Domaine Belargus tends a 24-hectare vineyard farmed exclusively using biodynamic methods. Crafted from rigorously selected grands crus, lieux-dits and monopoles, these Loire wines showcase the richness and minerality of Chenin Blanc.

The vineyard

Produced in very small quantities to preserve a trace of this exceptional vintage, the Layon Ultra 2018 from Domaine Belargus is a Coteaux du Layon Chaume wine made exclusively from plots in Quarts-de-Chaume.

The vintage

The winter was cold and wet, punctuated by frosty spells. Spring conditions then combined rain with warm temperatures, leading to rapid vegetative growth but also particularly high mildew pressure in June. Thanks to the water reserves built up in spring, the lack of water and high temperatures recorded over the summer had no impact on the vineyard, and the season gave way to a particularly mild autumn. Beginning on 10 September and stretching until late October, the harvest revealed berries of outstanding quality, giving rise to a historic vintage.

Vinification and ageing

Aged in barrels for 22 months.
