The estate

Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, Domaine Caroline Frey spans 3.5 hectares farmed according to biodynamic principles and in conversion to organic agriculture. Led by Caroline Frey, a pioneering figure in biodynamic viticulture in France, the estate favours gentle vineyard management and respectful winemaking, revealing the authentic expression of Burgundy's terroirs.

The vineyard

The Aloxe-Corton comes from a 0.5490-hectare plot located between 200 and 300 metres in altitude. The Pinot Noir vines, aged 45 years, are rooted in reddish-brown soils rich in siliceous nodules and limestone-flint debris. This mosaic of terroirs, ranging from stony areas to more clay-rich or marly sectors, gives the wines a diversity of styles: the stony soils produce supple, elegant wines, while the clay-marl areas give rise to firm, complex wines.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage stands out as the warmest year recorded since 1959, with rainfall close to the average. A very mild winter led to early budbreak, followed by berry set closure around 23 June for the most advanced vines. The mosaic of terroirs generated staggered ripening depending on flowering dates and localised rainfall. The growing cycle was respected, lasting 90 to 100 days. The historically early harvest took place on 26 and 27 August, revealing the first juices to be delicious with lovely freshness. This demanding vintage promises great quality.

Winemaking and aging

The Aloxe-Corton Village 2020 is hand-harvested with plot-by-plot sorting in small crates. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur in oak barrels, followed by 15 months of aging.
