Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for L'Olivaie 2024 from Domaine Coursodon
Tasting notes
Appearance
This Saint-Joseph displays a very deep crimson hue, enlivened by violet reflections that hint at the concentration of the fruit.
Nose
The nose is concentrated, driven by aromas of black and red fruits and lifted by spicy notes that reflect the ripeness of the hillside Syrah.
Palate
The palate combines length and power, with a silky tannic structure and a well-balanced texture. The medium-bodied frame reveals a subtle imprint of the ageing, without ever masking the freshness of the fruit.
Food and wine pairings
This wine is ideally paired with game and slow-cooked meats, as well as dishes built around mushrooms and foie gras, where its tannic structure and aromatic richness find a perfect echo.
Serving and cellaring
Saint-Joseph L'Olivaie 2024 is best enjoyed at a serving temperature of around 16°C, which preserves its aromatic freshness while revealing the fullness of its tannic structure.
A Saint-Joseph from Domaine Coursodon, a hillside Syrah balancing power and elegance
The estate
Domaine Coursodon was founded at the end of the 19th century in Mauves, the historic cradle of the Saint-Joseph appellation, in the Rhône Valley. Today run by Pierre and Jérôme Coursodon, the fourth and fifth generations respectively, the estate devotes all 16 hectares to this single appellation, spread across Mauves, Tournon, Glun and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. This exclusive focus, combined with hand-tended viticulture on steep granite slopes, has made Domaine Coursodon a recognised benchmark for Saint-Joseph.
The vineyard
The L'Olivaie cuvée comes from the lieu-dit Saint-Epine, located in the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, in the north of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The plot rests on very friable, shallow granite with a due south exposure, tempered by the cooling influence of the Doux valley. The old Syrah vines are planted at high density, at around 8,500 vines per hectare, and are goblet-trained on slopes so steep that any mechanisation is impossible: all vineyard work, including spraying, is carried out entirely by hand.
Winemaking and ageing
Saint-Joseph L'Olivaie 2024 is made from fully destemmed grapes, vinified in open vats with twice-daily punch-downs to ensure a steady extraction of substance and colour. The wine is then aged for approximately fifteen months in oak barrels, with a small proportion of new wood, in order to preserve the expression of the fruit while providing a firm structure and a harmonious integration of oak.
Grape variety
This Saint-Joseph is made from Syrah.
