Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

An elegant, well-defined white, whose racy acidity drives the lemon, apple, mineral, vanilla and smoky oak aromas and flavors. Turns creamier and more linear on the finish, where butterscotch, peach and citronella notes persist. Best from 2027 through 2040. 82 cases made, 16 cases imported.

Cask sample. Very tight and restrained and unlike a grand cru now. Too simple! It takes a great leap of faith to believe it will become something really exciting and up to grand cru standard. (JR)

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 Domaine Faiveley

Tasting

Colour
The glass reveals a pale to medium-intensity lemon-yellow hue, reflecting its origin in a cool climate and meticulous control of oxidation.

Nose
Multiple aromatic layers unfold gradually. The first whiffs release vibrant notes of lemon and lime zest. As the wine opens up, delicate touches of white flowers such as acacia emerge, mingling with scents of hay, dried herbs and white pepper, before blossoming into aromas of orange peel, pear and apricot.

Palate
The palate offers a striking contrast between vibrant freshness and remarkable mid-palate concentration. Citrus and floral flavours intertwine in a silky texture, underpinned by perfectly calibrated acidity. The finish lingers on a particularly persistent chalky, stony minerality.

Food and Wine Pairing

This white Grand Cru pairs wonderfully with shellfish such as grilled lobster or langoustine. It also enhances delicate fish served grilled or in a creamy sauce, as well as poultry in cream sauce. For cheese lovers, aged hard cheeses will reveal the full mineral complexity of this wine, as will a refined foie gras preparation.

Service and Storage

With excellent ageing potential, this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 can be enjoyed from 2027 and will continue to evolve favourably until at least 2037.

The Mineral Expression of a Great White Terroir in Burgundy

The Estate

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley embodies viticultural excellence through seven generations at the heart of Burgundy. Now run by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, the estate spans more than 120 hectares across the region's most prestigious terroirs. Historically renowned for its spirit of innovation, the family notably co-founded the famous Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. The estate stands out for its environmentally responsible approach, with a full conversion of the vineyard to organic farming planned for 2025.

The Vineyard

The plots dedicated to Corton-Charlemagne cover an area of 0.87 hectares, acquired by the family in 1874. Situated at an altitude ranging from 305 to 360 metres, these vines, planted between 1933 and 2010, benefit from a complex mosaic of soils. The upper sections rest on grey marls, while the lower areas are rooted in clay and limestone soils. All of these microclimates are cultivated according to the principles of organic farming.

The Vintage

The year 2023 stood out for its particularly favourable climatic conditions. Adequate rainfall was ideally offset by warm, dry weather during the crucial period leading up to the harvest. This mild weather resulted in an abundant crop, ensuring optimal phenolic ripeness in the berries while preserving a lovely freshness.

Winemaking and Aging

The fermentation and maturation of this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 take place entirely in French oak barrels. Ageing is carried out using a balanced proportion of half new barrels and half once-used barrels, adding subtle structure without masking the identity of the terroir.
