Description

A complex and generous Volnay 1er Cru red wine

The estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley in the village of Nuits, the Faiveley estate is one of the finest references in the Côte de Nuits. Now led by Erwan & Eve Faiveley, the 7th generation of the family, this illustrious house offers enthusiasts a superb range that precisely reflects the mosaic of Burgundy's terroirs.

The vineyard

While the Faiveley estate was historically established in the Côtes de Nuits at Nuits-Saint-Georges, the house has gradually expanded its vineyard into the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. Today, the Faiveley estate owns 12 Grands Crus and 25 Premiers Crus in Burgundy and oversees an exceptional heritage of vines.

The wine

The Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots" Joseph Faiveley 2020 from Domaine Faiveley is made from an east-facing plot with limestone soils composed of brown silts.

The vintage

An unusually mild and dry winter leads to an early bud break. Although April begins with frosts that do not impact the vineyard, the month ends after seven weeks of drought with life-saving rains. The early nature of the vintage is confirmed with a 24-day advance over 2019. In May, while flowering is uniform in Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune thanks to a sunny (25°C) and slightly windy period, it is disrupted in Côte de Nuits due to rainy and cool weather. The summer is extremely dry, causing significant water stress, except for the Nuits-Vougeot area, which experiences a major storm on August 1st. In line with this vintage, the harvest begins early.

Vinification and aging

The hand-harvested grapes undergo a short cold pre-fermentation maceration before vinification. Fermentation lasts 18 to 20 days. Aging for 16 to 18 months in vaulted cellars dating from the 19th century. The proportion of new barrels varies depending on the vintage.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
