The Freshness and Complexity of a Loire White Wine by Henri Bourgeois
The Estate
Established in 1950 by Henri Bourgeois in Chavignol, this family-owned Loire estate continues a Sancerre winemaking tradition dating back to 1696 over more than ten generations. Under the direction of Jean-Marie, Arnaud, Lionel, and Jean-Christophe Bourgeois, the estate cultivates over 70 hectares in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, specializing in Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The Henri Bourgeois estate stands out for its exceptional plots like La Côte des Monts Damnés and its organic certification obtained in 2023.
The Vineyard
"Le Cotelin" is a Sancerre wine from the "Maimbray" plot, located in the northwest of the Sancerre appellation. This 1.23-hectare vineyard, planted in 1989, rests on characteristic Kimmeridgian marls.
Winemaking and Aging
Hand harvested at optimal maturity after berry tasting. Slow, gentle pressing over 3 hours, followed by natural cold settling for 5 days with daily lees stirring. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 4 weeks, divided between stainless steel tanks for one-third and 600-liter demi-muids for the remaining two-thirds. The total aging of this Sancerre white wine is 12 months, including lees stirring in barrels until Christmas, followed by a minimum of 12 months in bottle.
Grape Variety
100% Sauvignon Blanc.
