Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 from Domaine Humbert Frères
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep purple hue with intense ruby highlights.
Nose
Powerful and captivating, the nose reveals great complexity. It exhales aromas of black fruits such as blackcurrant and black cherry, mingled with notes of ripe red fruit. Aeration releases spicy, peppery touches, as well as earthier nuances evoking humus, poached plum, smoked game and a subtle woodiness.
Palate
The palate opens onto a dense, rich material, offering remarkable volume. Showing a slight rusticity at first, it gains suppleness with aeration and unfolds vibrant flavours. The solid, structured tannic frame is balanced by lovely acidity. The lingering finish, moderately firm in its youth, extends into an elegant, saline minerality.
Food and Wine Pairings
This characterful red wine is a wonderful match for rich, structured meats such as beef ribs, braised lamb, or feathered and furred game. It will also surprise when paired with meaty fish served in a red wine sauce, such as pike-perch or tuna, and will pair perfectly with mature cow's milk cheeses such as Époisses, Ami du Chambertin or Cîteaux.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate this Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2022, it is recommended to serve it at around 16°C, taking care to open or decant it beforehand. Built for ageing, this wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2034.
The Power and Minerality of a Gevrey-Chambertin Red Wine
The Estate
Founded over a century ago, Domaine Humbert Frères is a family-run estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of Burgundy, France. Taken over in 1989 by brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel, the estate is now co-run by Emmanuel and his nephew, Pierre-Yves Humbert. This roughly seven-hectare vineyard is devoted exclusively to growing Pinot Noir. Certified High Environmental Value, the estate stands out for its exceptional heritage of very old vines and its style, combining power, concentration and a meticulous expression of terroir.
The Vineyard
This Gevrey-Chambertin wine comes from a careful selection of the estate's oldest vines, ranging from fifty to eighty years old. The plots, facing south and south-east, sit on clay-limestone and marl soils typical of the Côte de Nuits. The blend brings together around fifteen individual vineyard sites, half of which come from the Marchais sector. This area, under the cooler influence of the combe, brings remarkable tension and minerality to the grapes. The vineyard is managed according to sustainable viticulture principles, with entirely hand-harvested grapes.
The Vintage
2022 ranks among Burgundy's warmer vintages. Weather conditions provided particularly favourable ripening for the grapes, resulting in rich, concentrated berries while preserving a lovely natural balance throughout the growing cycle.
Winemaking and Ageing
The winemaking of the Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2022 is characterised by sustained extraction to reveal the full depth of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks for precise heat management. The wine then undergoes ageing of around fifteen months, with malolactic fermentation carried out in oak barrels. The measured use of oak supports the wine's structure without masking the brightness of the fruit.
