The Authentic Expression of a Burgundy Terroir by Domaine Lorenzon
The Estate
Founded in the 1920s by Georges Lorenzon, Domaine Lorenzon is an essential name in the Burgundy region. Now run by Bruno Lorenzon, who took over in 1997, the estate spans a vineyard of nine to ten hectares. The current owner brings a distinctive vision, favouring meticulous soil work and an environmentally respectful approach, without seeking official certification. The estate stands out for its exacting viticultural methods, aimed at capturing the purest expression of its terroirs.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from thirteen distinct plots of old vines located in the premier cru areas of the Mercurey appellation. Facing south and south-east, at an altitude ranging from 230 to 320 metres, this terroir rests on very stony limestone and marl soils. The vines are trained at a very high planting density, reaching up to 20,000 vines per hectare, combined with high trellising of 1.70 metres. The soils are worked mechanically and the grapes are hand-harvested into small crates.
The Vintage
The year 2022 was marked by particularly hot and dry weather. After a spring with little rainfall, the summer season saw unprecedented temperatures and a marked lack of precipitation. This water stress meant waiting for the saving rains at the end of the season before harvesting, allowing the berries to retain good freshness despite the summer heat.
Winemaking and Aging
The making of the Mercurey 1er Cru "Pièce 13" 2022 begins with a fermentation of around four weeks incorporating some of the stems, punctuated by regular punching down. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, 20 to 40% of which are new, with very light, bespoke toasting. Ageing concludes with a six-month period in stainless steel tanks before bottling, which is carried out without fining or filtration.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
