Description
The freshness and aromatic richness of an Alsace white wine by Marcel Deiss
The estate
Located in Bergheim, in the heart of Alsace wine country, the Marcel Deiss House is a brand ambassador for its region. Born into a family of winegrowers who had lived in Bergheim since 1744, Marcel Deiss became a soldier when he came of age and left his native land. When he returned after the Second World War, he decided to invest in the family passion: the vine. With the help of his son André, he set about developing a dynamic business. Today, the house is managed by the charismatic Jean-Michel Deiss and his son Mathieu.
Marcel Deiss has a very particular approach to wine that is close to a vision that could be called Burgundian. In fact, in a wine region that generally emphasises grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, etc.), at the Marcel Deiss estate, these are replaced by the terroir. The different vines are planted together in a plot and all the grape varieties receive the same treatment. They are also harvested together. All the vintages are also vinified in the same way. The choice of biodynamic agriculture contributes strongly to this promotion of the terroirs in Alsace, which is one of the regions of France with the most varied soils.
Tasting and comparing the wines of the estate is a unique and meaningful experience that shows determining influence of the terroir on the taste of the wine. To take this approach further, the Marcel Deiss estate is investing in a new level of appellation in Alsace: the premiers crus, well-defined terroirs comparable to the climats of Burgundy. Always ahead of its time and dynamic, Marcel Deiss is a must, offering a unique and exciting approach to Alsatian wines.
The vineyard
The vintages of the Marcel Deiss estate are different from one another thanks to the many terroirs composed of limestone, granite, schist, gneiss and sandstone. One of the most emblematic vineyards is the Champ de failles de Ribeauvillé which comprises 38 hectares. It is placed on hillsides belonging to the communes of Rorschwihr, Bergheim, Ribeauvillé, Zellenberg, Riquewihr and Sigolsheim. Many of Alsace's famous grand crus can be found on these plots, bringing huge possibility for wine making. The faults allow the roots of the vines to reach depths of up to 40 metres. The many valleys, streams and winds create microclimates. The Alsatian grape varieties are adapted to the harsh continental climate which allows the formation of noble rot.
