Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Mâcon-Verzé 2020 from Domaine Leflaive
Tasting
Appearance
This white wine shows a beautiful visual intensity, reflecting the full richness of its terroir.
Nose
Remarkably pure, the bouquet reveals a profile that is both floral and mineral. It opens with indulgent notes of pastry and hazelnut, soon joined by fruity aromas of white peach and lemon, all underscored by a delicate saline touch.
Palate
Energetic and full of vivacity, the palate strikes a remarkable balance between generous textural richness and a highly refined acidity. The particularly long finish is carried by this superb acid tension and ends on subtle, exceptionally elegant bitter notes.
Food and wine pairings
Thanks to its tension and richness, this white wine will pair wonderfully with fish in sauce or flavourful poultry in a cream sauce.
Serving and cellaring
With its fine structure, this cuvée can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few years to reveal further complexity.
The biodynamic excellence of Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy
The estate
Although the family's roots go back to 1717, Domaine Leflaive was truly founded in 1905 under the leadership of Joseph Leflaive. Located in Puligny-Montrachet, in the heart of Burgundy, this illustrious estate has been run since 2015 by Brice de La Morandière, who represents the fourth generation. A pioneer of viticulture that respects living ecosystems, the domaine converted all of its vineyards to biodynamics as early as 1996. Renowned worldwide for its great white wines, it combines family heritage, meticulous horse-drawn soil cultivation and an unceasing pursuit of excellence.
The vineyard
The Mâcon-Verzé cuvée comes from a 9.33-hectare vineyard in the Mâconnais, in the village of Verzé. Planted on clay-limestone soils, the vineyard is divided into five distinct lieux-dits: Les Muses, Escolles, Le Monté, En Perret and Les Chênes. Farmed biodynamically since their acquisition in 2004, these vines receive meticulous care and are harvested entirely by hand.
Vinification and ageing
After a long, gentle pressing followed by 24 hours of settling in Verzé, the musts are transported daily to the cellars in Puligny-Montrachet. Fermentation is overseen by the technical team in a variety of vessels: 78% in stainless steel tanks, 10% in large wooden foudres and 12% in oak barrels (40% of them new). The wine is first aged on its lees for 10 months in these same vessels, then racked for a further 6 months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks, before a very light fining and filtration.
Grape variety
Chardonnay (100%).
