Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Morgon "Côte du Py" 2023 from Jean Foillard
Tasting
Colour
This red wine displays a deep ruby hue with garnet highlights, standing out for its brilliance and clarity.
Nose
Intense and highly complex, the bouquet reveals aromas of ripe black fruits such as cherry and blackberry, intertwined with floral notes of violet and peony. With aeration, subtle hints of sweet spices, crushed stone and delicate smoky nuances further enrich this aromatic palette.
Palate
The attack is broad and silky, introducing a fleshy, dense texture. The structure is supported by fine tannins and lovely vibrancy. The long, lively finish lingers on notes of morello cherry, black pepper and a delicate salinity.
Food and Wine Pairings
This Morgon pairs beautifully with duck breast, bœuf bourguignon or a mushroom risotto. It is also an excellent match for grilled red meats, small game birds and aged cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire or Reblochon.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate this Morgon "Côte du Py" 2023, serve it at a temperature between 13 and 16°C. Aerating the wine for one to two hours beforehand is recommended to release its full aromatic range. This age-worthy wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop gracefully until at least 2040.
The Mineral, Silky Expression of a Great Beaujolais Terroir
The Estate
Founded several decades before being taken over in 1981, the estate now covers around 22 hectares in the heart of Beaujolais, in Villié-Morgon. Currently run by the Foillard family, with Jean Foillard and his wife Agnès at the helm, the estate has established itself as an essential benchmark. A pioneer of a minimal-intervention approach since the 1980s, the estate favours environmentally friendly practices, with the vast majority of its vines farmed according to the principles of organic agriculture. Its wines stand out for their purity, their generosity and their remarkable ageing potential.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from the renowned Côte du Py climat, located within the Morgon appellation. This exceptional terroir is characterised by well-exposed slopes and poor soils made up of schist and decomposed granite, rich in manganese. The vines, aged between 10 and 90 years, with some even over a century old, send their roots deep into the ground, fostering a unique mineral expression. The vineyard is tended without herbicides or synthetic plant-protection products, and the grapes are harvested by hand.
Vinification and Ageing
Vinification follows the region's traditional method, with cold carbonic maceration of whole bunches for around four weeks. Fermentations take place spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for six to nine months in old oak foudres and barrels, with no new wood whatsoever. A light filtration is carried out before bottling.
