Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the "Champin le Seigneur" 2023
Tasting
Colour
Displaying beautiful depth, the red colour reveals subtle violet hues.
Nose
Powerful and complex, the bouquet reveals aromas of ripe black fruit such as black cherry and blackberry, enhanced by floral notes of violet and hints of spicy pepper. On aeration, nuances of leather, liquorice, blond tobacco and smoke enrich this aromatic palette.
Palate
The lively, fresh attack gives way to a full, voluminous body, supported by firm, silky tannins. The palate reveals beautiful depth with fruity and spicy flavours, underlined by fine minerality and delicate oak. The finish lingers with remarkable persistence.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs perfectly with rich, flavourful meats such as braised lamb shank, jugged hare or duck breast. It also goes wonderfully with a fine piece of aged beef served with sautéed mushrooms.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate the "Champin le Seigneur" 2023, it is recommended to serve it between 16 and 18°C, taking care to decant it while it is young. With great potential for ageing, it can be kept and enjoyed until around 2035.
The elegance and complexity of a great Côte-Rôtie wine
The estate
Founded in 1983 in Ampuis, at the heart of the Rhône Valley, the Jean-Michel Gérin estate played a major role in the revival of its appellation. Descended from a family established for six generations, Jean-Michel Gérin transformed the family vineyard into an internationally renowned estate. Today, he still runs the estate, supported by his two sons, Michaël and Alexis, who oversee the technical and strategic management. The estate stands out for its respectful approach to terroir and its minimal-intervention philosophy.
The vineyard
The grapes come from eleven distinct plots located in the northern part of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. The vines, averaging around thirty years of age, thrive on particularly steep slopes. The terroir benefits from a complex geology dominated by mica schist and loess, cultivated with a high planting density and meticulously tended by hand to ensure optimal fruit quality.
Winemaking and ageing
After hand-harvesting, the bunches destined for the "Champin le Seigneur" 2023 are fully destemmed. A three-week maceration then takes place in stainless steel tanks to extract the aromas while preserving freshness. Ageing takes place over a period of 22 months in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of 30% new wood, the remainder consisting of barrels that have already held one or two wines.
Grape varieties
Syrah (95%), Viognier (5%).
