James Suckling

Fascinating smoky and flinty nose that’s just beginning to show the first touch of bottle age. I love the ripe Amalfi-lemon fruit and the touch of fresh pineapple on the chalky and zesty palate. Long, firm finish with a touch of tannin. Drink now.

Neal Martin

The 2019 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru has an attractive but slightly generic bouquet where the oak feels obvious and too vocal. The palate is well balanced but simple. This is a Montmains that wants to appeal to everyone, but lacks the complexity and tension to rank among the best.

Excellent wine, precise and vinous, with great natural balance; a very beautiful wine, fine and delicious—excellent.

Description

A refined and balanced Chablis 1er Cru

The estate
Founded in 1923 in Burgundy, La Chablisienne has established itself as the leading producer of the Chablis appellation and one of France’s most emblematic cooperative cellars. Thanks to the exceptional richness of its climats, it reveals the full complexity of the Kimmeridgian terroir, the mineral signature of chardonnay, the emblematic grape variety of this region.

The vineyard
Originating from a terroir located on the left bank of the Serein, this Chablis 1er Cru Montmains benefits from an ideal southeast exposure. The vines, averaging 25 years of age, root in soils typical of this Burgundian appellation, contributing to the wine’s elegance and freshness.

Vinification and aging
After a cold static settling, the musts are vinified both in vats and barrels, where alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place. The aging of this Chablis 1er Cru on fine lees lasts 12 months, split between vats and barrels, to preserve the purity of the fruit while gaining complexity.

Grape variety
