Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Ermitage Blanc 2025 from M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a सुंदर pale golden hue, clear and bright.

Nose

The nose, initially discreet, gradually opens with aeration. It reveals delicate mineral notes reminiscent of struck flint, then evolves toward aromas of lemon blossom, warm shortcrust pastry, and sweet spices. The whole gains depth and reveals great complexity.

Palate

The attack is fresh and flavorful, carried by a taut and precise palate. The aromatic palette expresses itself elegantly around citrus notes, slightly peaty, supported by a persistent iodine and saline imprint. The texture, slender and mineral, stretches with finesse, revealing subtle complexity in the background.

A white wine from the Ermitage appellation marked by freshness and tension

The estate

Founded in 1808, Maison M. Chapoutier is an essential reference of the Rhône Valley. A pioneer of biodynamics since 1991 under the impetus of Michel Chapoutier, the estate now spans nearly 500 hectares worldwide. Renowned for its precise parcel-based approach, it aims to reveal the full richness of each terroir. Today, operational and technical management is ensured by the new generation, with Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier, guarantors of continuity and family values.

The vineyard

With 31 hectares, the estate is the main owner within the Ermitage appellation. The vineyard stretches across a steep granite hill, arranged in ancient terraces overlooking the river. The highly diverse soils combine granite arenas rich in quartz, clay-limestone formations dotted with pebbles, and alluvial zones. Facing due south and benefiting from optimal sunshine, the whole is cultivated biodynamically.

The vintage

A vintage beginning with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building good water reserves, followed by a long cold period delaying budburst and reducing the risk of frost. Spring, alternating rain and sunshine, led to strong vegetative growth and increased vine pressure, with early flowering but few grape clusters. Summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hail episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. The harvest, early from mid-August, was spread out thanks to late-August rains that refined ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for this Ermitage Blanc are hand-harvested at perfect ripeness and carefully sorted. After light cold settling, fermentation takes place in barrels at controlled temperatures between 18 and 20°C. The wine is then aged on its lees for 10 to 12 months with regular bâtonnage. Aging is mainly carried out in 600-liter demi-muids and large casks, with around 10% new oak and 15% in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness.
