Description

Tasting notes and advice for Le Méal 2025 by M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Appearance

Dark and deep, the wine shows carmine highlights, suggesting excellent concentration.

Nose

The highly expressive nose combines blackberry coulis with hints of cold smoke and warmed stone. A more vegetal touch, reminiscent of fig leaf, adds depth and complexity.

Palate

The attack is broad, followed by a structured and enveloping texture. The tannins, remarkably fine, offer a velvety mouthfeel. The fruit reveals fresh blackberry and blueberry, enhanced by a hint of fern and a delicate floral note reminiscent of orange blossom.

The estate

Founded in 1808 in Tain, the Maison M. Chapoutier stands as a leading reference in the Rhone Valley. Now led by Michel Chapoutier, representing the seventh generation, it spans approximately 355 hectares of vineyards worldwide. A pioneering estate, it is distinguished by its strong commitment to biodynamics, initiated in 1991, and by a parcel-based approach seeking to reveal the purest expression of each terroir. Alongside his children Mathilde and Maxime, Michel Chapoutier continues to uphold the high standards and global reputation of a house renowned for the authenticity of its wines.

The vineyard

The Le Méal cuvée comes from a plot of around 2.2 hectares located within the highly reputed Ermitage appellation. This unique terroir consists of high terraces combining clay and rounded pebbles, capable of capturing and releasing heat. Benefiting from a full southern exposure, the vineyard is planted with old vines aged between 50 and over 70 years. The whole is managed under strict biodynamic practices, promoting soil microbial activity to precisely express the site’s geological identity.

The vintage

The vintage began with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building strong water reserves, followed by prolonged cold conditions that delayed budbreak and reduced the risk of frost. Spring, alternating between rain and sunshine, led to vigorous vegetative growth and increased pressure on the vines, with early flowering but few grape clusters. Summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hailstorm episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. The harvest, starting early in mid-August, was spread out thanks to late-August rains that refined ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

The production of Le Méal follows a low-intervention, biodynamic approach, where harvest dates are guided by lunar and celestial cycles. Vinification includes a proportion of whole clusters during fermentation, combined with shorter maceration periods. These precise technical choices aim to limit extraction in favor of the grape variety’s finesse.

Grape variety

Le Méal 2025 by M. Chapoutier is made from 100% Syrah.
