Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Niepoort's Redoma Branco 2023
Tasting
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals fresh notes of aromatic herbs and honeysuckle, accompanied by citrus and stone fruit aromas.
Palate
The tasting reveals a delicate and balanced texture, marked by a characteristic spicy finish. The persistent acidity brings freshness and vivacity, supporting a mineral structure that perfectly reflects the mica schist terroir of the Douro.
Food and wine pairings
This Portuguese white wine pairs perfectly with oysters and other seafood. It also wonderfully accompanies oven-baked fish as well as poultry and white meats. For vegetarian options, opt for dishes based on root vegetables such as turnip, sweet potato or beetroot, a Caesar salad or cheese preparations.
Service and aging
The Redoma Branco 2023 expresses its full potential when served between 10 and 12°C. Although it is already pleasant to taste, this wine can be kept until around 2030, gaining in complexity over time.
A white wine from Duriense combining freshness and minerality
The estate
Founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, the Niepoort house is a pillar of viticulture in the Douro region, also known as Duriense. Today led by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation, this family house stands out for its innovative approach that combines tradition and modernity. Since 2012, Niepoort has favored biodynamic practices in its vineyards such as Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril. Recognized for its Port wines and dry wines, the house saw its director honored by the Decanter Hall of Fame in 2023.
The vineyard
This Redoma Branco comes from old vines aged 65 to 85 years, located in the Douro region, at an altitude between 400 and 600 meters. This unique terroir is characterized by mica schist soils that give the wine its distinctive minerality.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvest. Pressing then cold decanting for 24 hours. Spontaneous fermentation in French oak barrels of 228 and 500 liters. The wine is then aged in these same barrels for 8 months.
Blend
This white wine is made from a blend of native Portuguese grape varieties, mainly rabigato, codega do larinho, viosinho, donzelinho, gouveio and arinto, complemented by other traditional Douro varieties.
