Description

The richness and the opulence of an Australian Shiraz

The estate

Voted New World Winery of the Year in 2013 by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine, Penfolds had already established itself as an icon of Australia's great wines thanks to the unparalleled determination of Mary Penfold in the 19th century. Certainly the co-founder of Penfolds Winery devoted herself body and soul to making exceptional wines. Her life's work is reflected in the winery's success in establishing itself as a benchmark in Southern Australia. When Max Schubert joined the Penfolds venture in the 1950s, he brought to the estate's wines the elegance of the great Bordeaux wines that so fascinated him. Success was not long in coming when the cellar master signed his famous Grange cuvée, which crossed Australian borders to win the hearts of wine lovers around the world.

The vineyard

Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2020 is an Australian blend from several regions of Southern Australia: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully. This diversity enriches the wines with a sharpnes from a range of Australia's finest wine regions.

The wine

Penfolds' Bin 28 is a fine showcase for Australian Shiraz from warm climates: this wine is ripe, robust and delicious. Its first vintage dates back to 1959. Bin 28 was named after the famous Kalimna plot acquired by Penfolds in the Barossa Valley in 1945, from which the wine was originally made. Today, Bin 28 is a blend of different regions and plots, but with a strong Barossa Valley presence.

The vintage

The winter and spring were very dry which delayed flowering and fruit set. Irrigation was unavoidable as Clare Valley experienced its driest winter in 120 years. Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Padthaway and Barossa Valley suffered frosts in September which impacted on yields. The 2019 calendar year was the driest on record in the Barossa Valley. Fortunately, McLaren Vale had above average rainfall in February. The Shiraz was of perfect quality despite very low yields.

Winemaking and ageing

After the harvest and the fermentation phase, the wine was aged for 12 months in American oak demi-muids.
