Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2024
Tasting
Appearance
This wine displays a lovely straw-yellow hue, subtly lit by green highlights.
Nose
Highly precise and intensely concentrated, the bouquet opens with a striking minerality reminiscent of flint, slate and wet stone. It then moves towards saline aromas of sea spray and oyster shell, enriched by indulgent touches of brioche, toasted almond, spices and pistachio nougat, all underscored by delicately toasted oak.
Palate
The attack is taut, carried by a fine tannic framework and a lively acidity that gives the wine its structure. The palate reveals an iodine-tinged freshness with notes of sea salt and caper, wrapped in a restrained, lemony creaminess. Alcohol and oak remain very discreet, giving way to a persistent finish with mineral and ferrous accents.
Food and wine pairing
This great white wine pairs beautifully with fine seafood such as lobster or langoustines roasted in butter, as well as pan-seared scallops. It will also elevate white meats and poultry served with a creamy mushroom sauce, or hard cooked-pressed cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
Yattarna Chardonnay 2024 shows exceptional ageing potential. It can be cellared and enjoyed from 2027 until around 2047.
The precision and richness of a great Chardonnay from Southern Australia, crafted by Penfolds
The estate
Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, Penfolds is based at Magill Estate, near Adelaide in Southern Australia. Now owned by Treasury Wine Estates, this iconic brand has had its winemaking led by Peter Gago since 2002. Penfolds stands out for its unique multi-regional blending philosophy and its strong commitment to sustainability. A true global icon, the estate combines a rich historical heritage with constant innovation to produce wines of exceptional quality, capable of rivalling the world's greatest wines.
The vineyard
The grapes selected for this cuvée come from several cool-climate Australian wine regions, namely Tumbarumba, the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Rather than focusing on a single terroir, the House gives priority to fruit quality and its suitability for the desired style.
The vintage
2024 was marked by cool weather conditions and long, even growing seasons. Spring was variable, which had the effect of moderating yields. This was followed by a mild summer that encouraged slow, steady ripening of the berries, thereby preserving excellent natural acidity.
Winemaking and ageing
Yattarna Chardonnay 2024 was aged for 8 months. The wine rested in French oak barrels, 56% of which were new and 24% once-used.
Grape variety
This wine is made from Chardonnay.
