Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Kanosuke 2023 Limited Edition

Tasting

Nose
The nose reveals fine ashy peat notes with a medicinal touch, blending with spicy honey, mulled wine, cocoa, and a fresh hint of mint – a legacy of aging in ex-Sherry casks.

Palate
On the palate, the silky texture initially unveils herbaceous notes (parsley, eucalyptus, mint) before evolving into aromas of rice cake with cinnamon, apple pie, and milk chocolate. The warm, indulgent finish combines spicy honey, the sweetness of candied corn, and a subtle return of peat on ash and soot.

Food pairings and serving suggestions

This exceptional Japanese whisky is ideally enjoyed neat at room temperature to fully experience its aromatic complexity. A few drops of water can reveal additional nuances.

An exceptional, peated Japanese whisky full of balance and aromatic richness

The Kanosuke Distillery, the art of Japanese whisky in Kagoshima

Founded in 2018 by Komasa Jyozo, who has been producing Shochu in Kagoshima since 1883, the artisanal Kanosuke Distillery stands out for its use of three traditional copper pot stills with different shapes and inclinations, offering a wide spectrum of aroma profiles. This ancestral know-how combined with modern facilities quickly earned it international recognition and several awards at the World Whiskies Awards from 2019 to 2022.

The 2023 Limited Edition, an exceptional blend

This 2023 Limited Edition Single Malt is made from 100% malted barley. Double distillation takes place in the distillery's three copper Miyake pot stills, each imparting its own unique note to the final spirit.

Aging takes place in a unique combination of casks: ex-Bourbon casks, American oak casks that held "Mellowed Kozuru" rice Shochu, and Sherry casks. The use of casks that held Shochu is Kanosuke's distinct trademark, creating a distinctive aroma profile. The peated malt used was distilled in 2018 and 2019 and aged for an average of 4 to 5 years. This Limited Edition testifies to the distillery's exceptional know-how and its ability to create complex Japanese whiskies.
