Mount Gay: three centuries of Barbadian excellence

Officially founded in 1703 in Barbados, Mount Gay holds the exceptional status of the world’s oldest rum producer, with traces of distillation potentially dating back to 1654. Located in the parish of St. Lucy on a 280-acre estate, this Barbadian institution takes its name from Sir John Gay Alleyne, an emblematic 18th-century manager. Now majority-owned by Rémy Cointreau, the Ward and Hudson families retain a 40% stake. Mount Gay stands out for its use of natural Barbadian elements: water from a three-hundred-year-old well, local sugarcane, and natural yeasts, perpetuating unparalleled savoir-faire.

Master Blender Collection #7: the rebirth of a historic still

This seventh edition of the Master Blender Collection marks the revival of Mount Gay’s 100% copper Coffey Still, brought back into service in 2019. This still is one of only three remaining in operation worldwide, invented in the early 19th century by Aeneas Coffey.

Trudiann Branker, Master Blender, pays tribute through this expression to Reynold "Blues" Hinds, a legendary distiller who devoted over 50 years to Mount Gay. Crafted from 100% Barbadian molasses and aged 4 years in heavily charred ex-bourbon casks, this rum offers an authentic glimpse into 19th-century production methods. This limited edition of 5,004 numbered bottles is a testament to the distillery’s exceptional expertise and its commitment to innovation that respects tradition.
