An elegant nerello mascalese from Etna’s northern slope
The estate
Founded in 1830, the Tasca d'Almerita family has perpetuated exceptional winemaking expertise in Sicily for nine generations. Tenuta Tascante, one of the group’s five estates, stands out for its location on Etna’s northern slope, at 600 meters above sea level. Now run by Giuseppe and Alberto Tasca d'Almerita, the estate grows native grape varieties on volcanic soils. Awarded the Robert Parker Green Emblem in 2021, it embodies the combination of family tradition and sustainable viticulture.
The vineyard
Ghiaia Nera comes from vines located in the contrade of Sciaranuova, Piano Dario and Rampante, on the northern slope of Etna in the province of Catania. Planted between 2004 and 2007, the vines thrive at 600 meters above sea level on north-facing terraces of volcanic sediments.
The vintage
The year 2022 in Sicily began with a dry, cold winter, followed by a warm spring. Summer proved particularly hot, with rainfall in August helping to balance grape ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
Harvest took place between October 4 and 16, 2022. Ghiaia Nera 2022 is vinified traditionally for red wines with skin maceration. Fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature between 25 and 30°C for 6 days. The wine then undergoes complete malolactic fermentation before being aged for 12 months in 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, a gentle wood that respects the expression of the grape variety.
