Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A rich Champagne, with a chiseled frame of acidity meeting fine, lacy texture to produce a harmonious effect on the palate. Shows a lovely range of roasted almond, dried cherry and raspberry, mandarin orange peel, and accents of verbena, fleur de sel, brioche and espresso that play on the racy finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged 2020. Drink now through 2038. 59 cases imported.

An amazing 2008 rosé Champagne that has all the structure and aromatic complexity — sushi ginger, oolong tea and caramelized mandarin orange — we associate with this vintage, but also has more charm than most. On the palate, this has stunning concentration, yet is diamond bright. The interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and mineral acidity builds and builds at the breathtaking finish. The color comes from about 7% pinot noir red wine, partly from the little-known Les Riceys in the far south of Champagne. Drink now or hold.

La RVF

A lovely, subtle nose with beautiful finesse of style. Complexity comes from notes of candied orange and kumquat. Bigarade. This is a lovely rosé for contemplation, a serious wine.

Decanter

The red wine almost seems to tame this 2008 a little, adding warmth and roundness to an alluring, complex rosé that takes in savoury detail of sous-bois and dried spices, roasted red apple and cherry, all sitting beneath the same super-fine toasted almond and macaron top notes as the blanc. The acidity rolls on and on with boundless energy, but the narrow, fine fruit and umami flavour hold on for the ride. This superb, serious rosé still has considerable life ahead of it.

Roger Voss

At this age, the wine shows its maturity and richness. Dominated by a toasty, nutty character, the Champagne is underpinned by acidity and the merest hints of apple and red fruits. The wine is very ready to drink.

Description

A creamy and aromatic vintage rosé champagne

The property

An essential reference among the fine wines of Champagne, the Charles Heidsieck Champagne House watches over a prestigious legacy with chalk cellars dating back two thousand years. A pioneer, Charles Heidsieck distinguished himself at the end of the 1980s by highlighting the exceptional capacity for aromatic development of his multi-vintage Brut champagne. In 1987, Charles Heidsieck became the first Champagne house to indicate the year of "cellaring" in order to follow the evolution of the wine over time.

The vineyard

The Champagne House Charles Heidsieck owns a vineyard of around 60 hectares in the Marne and the Aube. This vineyard benefits from a certification in sustainable viticulture as well as High Environmental Value certification. In addition to its own vineyard and following the Champagne model, Charles Heidsieck supplements estate-grown fruit with grapes sourced through long-term supply contracts with rigorously selected winegrowers and cooperatives in Champagne.

The wine

This Rosé Vintage 2008 by Charles Heidsieck is made up of 11 rigorously selected Grands Crus and Premiers Crus.

The blend

Pinot Noir (63% including 9% red wine)
Chardonnay (37%). With a slightly lower dosage than that of previous vintages, this champagne exudes a tangy and thirst-quenching character in its youth.

Vintage Rosé 2008 by Charles Heidsieck: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

Colour
The colour is pale pink, noticeably lighter than that of previous vintages.

Nose
Salty and mineral, the first nose reveals fragrances of smoke and toast. Swirling the glass reveals notes of citrus, pink grapefruit, blood orange and currants. While the fruity bouquet is discreet in its youth, this champagne gains in intensity over the years, revealing more complex notes of sour cherry, licorice and black tea.

Palate
The palate seduces with its liveliness and density, typical of the vintage. This vintage rosé champagne harmoniously combines a beautiful freshness with a powerful and restrained structure. Persistent and delicious, the finish offers a very pleasant creamy sensation on the palate combined with an effervescence of great finesse.

Food and wine pairings

The smooth structure brought about over 10 years of ageing on lees makes this Rosé Millésimé 2008 from Charles Heidsieck the ideal partner for a grilled red mullet, a salmon tartare with citrus fruits and fresh figs or even an Époisses cheese.
