James Suckling

Full plum fruit, but no hint of prune, give this bold and generous wine some appeal. Plenty of moderately dry tannins on the warm and supple palate. The alcohol is well held in check. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast

A.I.

Hints of brandied cherries and crushed graphite accent piercing blackberry and raspberry in this full-bodied and ripe yet stately wine. Sourced from one of Chanson's monopole vineyards, it's pure in black-fruit flavors yet doesn't shy away from savory complexities of minty green herbs and charred earth. Soft in tannins and freshly balanced, it should improve through 2035 and hold further.

Description

The structure and aromatic richness of a Beaune Premier Cru Monopole

The property

Founded in 1750, Chanson is one of the most famous houses in Burgundy. The estate is located in a bastion erected at the beginning of the 16th century as a watchtower with 8-meter-thick walls, nicknamed "The Tower of the Girls" and today dedicated to the aging of the house's wines. Well known to lovers of great Burgundy wines, the Chanson estate offers confidential cuvées brilliantly revealing the expression of the greatest wine-growing villages of the Côte de Beaune.

The vineyard

This Burgundian estate extends over 45 hectares of vines planted on the most beautiful appellations of the Côte de Beaune (Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Beaune, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Corton...), exclusively in Premiers and Grands Crus.

The wine

This Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Fèves" Monopole 2019 from the Chanson estate is made from a 3.80 hectare plot located mid-slope in the heart of the Beaune Premiers Crus. The Clos des Fèves was listed as early as 1307 under the Latin name of "Fae" (beech in Latin).

The vintage

While 2019 begins with a mild winter, spring is marked by temperature variations and significant rainfall, resulting in a lot of millerandage. The scorching summer is punctuated by salvaging storms for the vineyard.

Vinification and aging

Fermentation in whole clusters. The aging lasts 14 to 18 months within the 15th century Bastion with a moderate proportion of new barrels.

Grape variety

100% pinot noir.
