Decanter

Dark bramble, blackcurrant, liquorice, plum and cedar spice on the nose. Lithe, supple and juicy on the palate, so mouthwatering but also a touch dry with the weight of tannin heft. Raspberry leaf and juicy redcurrants are nuanced with delicate precision and balance. Fresh with cinnamon and aniseed on the finish.

James Suckling

Attractive dark fruit, graphite and fresh, violet-like flowers lead to a palate that has an assertive, concentrated and handsomely structured core of powerful, ripe tannins, carrying ample dark, dense fruit flavors long. Try from 2022.

With its licorice-infused, dark red berry, coffee bean and mocha personality, the wine is round, forward and loaded with sweet, ripe, juicy fruits.

classic structure, red and dark fruit, a bit tannic, dense and rather long, a style that needs time.

Smoked herbs, Christmas spice, tobacco, and black raspberry fruits all emerge from the 2016 Château Cap de Mourlin, an elegant, pretty, moderately concentrated Saint-Emilion that’s already drinking nicely.

Kunz Barrel Sample 17: Opulent, sweet, jammy bouquet, cherry compote, strawberry jam, caramel, mocha. Concentrated, broad palate with sweet fruit, sandy tannins, angular structure, drying finish. Still has room to improve.

Bettane+Desseauve

A precisely concentrated wine, without showiness, still with a slight hardness in the tannins.

La RVF

Tight, muscular, and promising, it offers a matte fruit profile with substantial chew, fleshier but less refined and less taut than its stablemate Balestard.

Yves Beck

Dense garnet red. Nose marked by its élevage, also revealing chalky notes. The attack mirrors the nose and clearly reflects its character. Ultimately, the élevage notes are also sustained on the palate. The drying, firm edge on the palate may diminish with a bit of cellar ageing.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

The best ever made. Dark, intense, purple color. A fruity, perfumed, and creamier-than-ever nose. A flavorful, full palate with more taste than ever. However, the finish still remains a touch harsh, as is often the case with the cru. Good length.

87–89. Barrel Sample. Under the same ownership as Balestard la Tonnelle, this is a wine whose tannins and extraction seem to have run away with it. While there is fruit underneath, it seems as though the future for this wine will be firm.
