James Suckling

Dark fruits with hints of toasted cedar, dark chocolate, licorice and dried herbs. Full-bodied and structured with firm tannins and a polished texture. Rich, chewy finish. Needs some time to soften. Try after 2025.

Full bottle 1,267 g. Certified HVE. Very oaky on the nose and palate – quite difficult to get beyond the portcullis of oak, in fact. Not a wine comfortable in its own skin. The tannins are bitter and skinny but loud. Maybe time will help? (TC)

The complicated nose, packed with licorice, smoke, espresso, black cherry, plum and dark chocolate, lets you know this is going to rock! The richness, opulent textures, freshness and chocolate-coated cherries taste and feel great on your palate as they linger, build and expand. This is the best vintage of Clos de Bouard produced yet! Drink from 2023–2040.

The 2020 Château Clos De Boüard is terrific. Exhibiting a deep ruby/purple hue as well as classy notes of black raspberries, cassis, spicy oak, and dried flowers, it hits the palate with a medium-bodied, seamless mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, and a beautiful sense of elegance and purity. It's not massive but absolutely shines for its complex, layered, finesse-driven style. Drink bottles over the coming 10-12 years.

Description

A delicate and subtle Montagne Saint-Émilion red wine

The property

Coralie de Boüard and her husband Loïc Maillet acquired in 2016 Château Clos de Boüard located in the satellite appellation Montagne Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard

The Château Clos de Boüard vineyard, around 40 years old, covers an area of 30 hectares, planted on clay-limestone slopes facing south.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes were selected manually via sorting table and optical sorting, followed by pre-fermentation maceration at 8 -10 ° C and alcoholic fermentation. Maceration lasted 3 to 5 weeks. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. The vinification was carried out entirely on a plot basis, accompanied by manual punch-downs. Ageing lasted 18 to 24 months in barrels (30% in new barrels and 30% in second-fill barrels).

The blend

The Château Clos de Boüard 2020 was made from a blend of Merlot (66%), Cabernet Franc (25%), Cabernet Sauvignon (9%).
