Robert Parker

Kenna Wells

Hailing from shallow granite sand soils, the 2022 Moulin-à-Vent Les Vérillats offers a medium to full-bodied profile, marked by notes of black cherry, mountain berries, spice, white pepper and a tracing of graphite. This is a wine of breadth, with broad shoulders and a framework of finely textured, powdery tannins that provide a gentle grip at the edges of the palate, aptly sized to the weight of the fruit.

Kristen Bieler

Notes of wild forest berries, plum and licorice offer an alluring profile, held upright by a firm mineral spine in this creamy, polished version. Singed herbs, warm soil and sandalwood smoke linger on the bold finish, which is smoky and nicely salty. Drink now through 2030. 823 cases made, 50 cases imported.

James Suckling

A lively, sharp and linear Beaujolais with aromas of sour cherries, frozen raspberries and warm spices, following through to a medium body with fine tannins. Peppery and focused, with a crisp stream of berries mingling with the spices. Vibrant and full of verve. Drink or hold.

Description

The intensity and refinement of a red wine from Beaujolais

The estate

A true emblem of the vineyard, the Château du Moulin-à-Vent has been located in the heart of the prestigious eponymous appellation, in the north of Beaujolais, since 1732. With over three centuries of history, the estate has seen three families succeed one another who, despite distinct paths, have all championed the primacy of Moulin-à-Vent. Under the direction of the Parinet family since 2009, the Château is experiencing an exemplary renaissance led by two bold spirits, Édouard Parinet and Brice Laffond. Driven by enthusiasm, curiosity and passion, they craft wines of high precision, true mirrors of the great Beaujolais terroirs.

The vineyard

From the lieu-dit "Les Vérillats", this wine comes from a 4.4-hectare parcel located at 300 meters altitude, within the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. The soils, composed of gorrhe, manganese and iron oxide, give it a distinctive identity. The cuvée is made from vines approximately 70 years old.

Winemaking and aging

Hand-harvested, the grapes are delicately placed in 30-liter containers, then meticulously sorted on two sorting tables. During vatting, 50% of the harvest is destemmed to preserve integrity and freshness. Fermentation takes place without added sulfites, punctuated by precise pump-overs and careful daily punch-downs. Aging is carried out for 18 months, half in stainless steel tanks and half in French oak barrels.

Grape variety

Les Vérillats 2022 from Château du Moulin-à-Vent is 100% gamay.
